Ziavi-Dzogbe Coffee

Ziavi is situated on the northern slope of the Togo Atakora mountain range which provides the climate for growing coffee beans. While visiting this community, agritourists can have a one-hour demonstration and discussion of the importance of coffee and cocoa as an export foodstuff.

This portion of the agritourism trail will focus on the cultivation of the Coffea tree (Coffea canephora), known as Robusta. This portion of the tour may include aspects of planting, growing, harvesting, and preparation for export.

Because of the seasonal nature of agriculture, some aspects of planting, harvesting, and production will be out of season; however, travelers may engage with growers and producers who are prepared to share their insider knowledge.

What Will You Experience?

Coffea canephora (robusta or nganda) is a shrub or small tree that grows indigenously in Ghana and across Western and Central Africa. Beans from Robusta are used primarily in instant coffee, espresso, and as a filler in ground coffee blends. Coffee made from these beans tends to have lower acidity, more bitterness, and a more woody and less fruity flavor compared to Arabica beans.

In Ziavi Dzogbe, coffee beans are grown organically without the use of chemical fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides, and are typically harvested after the second rains which occur between October and November. Coffee beans are harvested November to January.

  • Walk through the steps of coffee tree cultivation.

  • Experience aspects of harvesting and processing and preparing coffee beans for export.

  • Sample coffee beans in various stages of preparation.

  • Taste freshly produced coffee.
